New Leaf Editions presents “Renewal & Collaboration” by Talia Brown, on view from September 9th to 30th, 2025.

Renewal & Collaboration

My name is Talia Brown, and I am a fourth-year BFA student at UBC. My artistic practice is inspired by the town I grew up in, Salmon Arm, and the activities I did. Growing up, I spent a lot of time outdoors: skiing, climbing, canoeing, hiking. The connections I feel with nature has always had a large influence in my art. I’m fascinated with how landscapes change over time, and my work is a way of exploring the life cycle of nature, both natural and artificially influenced by humans.

The exhibition you see here is a culmination of my four-month internship with New Leaf Editions. As an apprentice to master printer Peter Braune and studio assistant Soyeon Kim, I gained amazing hands-on experience in a traditional printmaking studio.

During my time at New Leaf Editions I collaborated with many artists and their personal projects. A few of these include Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, Leo and Danielle Giannon, Heavenly Monkey, Ghizlane Agzenaï, and many more. This intensive period allowed me to learn and refine skills including multi-block relief printing, letterpress, monoprints, etching, cyanotypes, mezzotints, chine collé, à la poupée, electroplating, photogravure, among others. These skills will prove very valuable as I continue my growth in the print-making world. The featured series, Renewal, is a body of work I developed during my time at the studio. These pieces explore an industrial logging cycle, where logged trees will lead to new growth, new homes, and new forests. With the continued impact of climate change and consequences of it, such as the rapidly increasing rate of forest fires, this idea of a need for renewal is becoming more apparent each day.
